Recipe
- 1 large ripe pear
- ¾ cup whole milk (180 mL)
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (21 g)
- ¾ cup full fat plain Greek yogurt (170 g)
- 1 tablespoon honey (21 g)
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter (16 g)
Tips
1. Pour whole milk into the blender first so the cocoa powder and peanut butter don't stick to the sides.
2. Use a ripe pear that yields to gentle pressure for the most natural sweetness.
3. Freeze the pear pieces for at least 2 hours before blending for the thickest, creamiest shake.
4. Use unsweetened cocoa powder, not hot cocoa mix. The mix contains added sugar and powdered milk.
5. Full fat Greek yogurt is non-negotiable here. Reduced fat versions will make a thinner shake.
6. Natural peanut butter (just peanuts and salt) works best. Avoid sweetened or no-stir varieties.
7. Add an extra ¼ cup of whole milk if you want a drinkable consistency instead of a spoonable one.
Nutrition Notes
Pear provides about 5–6 grams of fiber and a mild flavor that lets chocolate and peanut butter shine.
Whole milk contributes about 8 grams of protein per cup, plus fat-soluble vitamins A and D.
Cocoa powder is one of the richest sources of flavanols, which improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. Three tablespoons also provide iron and magnesium.
Full fat Greek yogurt delivers 18–20 grams of protein per ¾ cup, plus probiotics and calcium.
Honey adds about 60 calories and 17 grams of sugar per tablespoon, with trace antioxidants and a lower glycemic index than refined sugar.
Peanut butter adds 4 grams of protein and 8 grams of heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats per tablespoon.
